Where are we
«Il Salento è una terra di miraggi, ventosa; è fantastico, pieno di dolcezza; resta nel mio ricordo più come un viaggio immaginario che come un viaggio vero.» (Guido Piovene, Viaggio in Italia, 1957)
Salento, (in Salento: Salentu), also known as the Salento peninsula and known as the Heel of Italy, is an Italian historical-geographical region coinciding with the southern part of the administrative region of Puglia , between the Ionian Sea to the west and the Adriatic Sea to the east.
The inhabitants of the area, which includes the entire province of Lecce, almost all of Brindisi and part of Taranto, are distinguished above all by glottological characteristics compared to the rest of the current administrative region of Puglia. From a historical point of view, Salento has been part of the ancient district called Terra d'Otranto for many centuries.
The Salento peninsula is the easternmost territory of Italy and Punta Palascìa or Capo d'Otranto constitutes its eastern end, 72 km away from Albania across the Strait of Otranto. According to nautical conventions, the ideal direction that separates the Ionian Sea from the Adriatic Sea starts from Punta Palascìa.
